Clear the mines

An art project with Frankfurt-based artist Peter Zizka and medico international. Private viewing in Freiburg in September 2004 for the premiere of CIVIL warS, a production of the opera by Philipp Glass concerned with the theme of war and heroism, performed in cooperation by P.O. and the Freiburg Theatre (under the artistic direction of Karen Kamensek). 600 strictly limited plates bearing photographs of the original mines were arranged on the floor of the foyer. Each 80 x 80 cm piece of this “hot spot” was available for purchase for € 500. This money went toward financing the clearing of mines from 1 square kilometre of land in countries such as Angola, Cambodia, etc. via medico international or toward funding other measures for the mental or physical rehabilitation of mine victims. After Freiburg, the exhibition moved to various locations including the Rotterdam Art Museum and the German Foreign Office. The art project generated a total of € 250,000. It was awarded the gold medal of the Art Directors Club Deutschland and the Art Diners Club of Europe.
