Philipp Glass
The opera is an early work by Philipp Glass, whose music is a prime example of his unmistakable style which made him one of the most successful and influential composers of the 20th century. Glass composed the last act, called the “Rome Section”, as an independent work for the Rome Opera. The music with its expressive arias and monumental choirs is based on the opera tradition of Italy. Similar to the theme of the civil war ubiquitous in the works of Giuseppe Verdi, it questions the relevance of this theme in the here and now.
