New community arts project WHO CARES? has begun
FACE T(W)O in Deventer | Netherlands
The collaborative project SUBTERA has received funding from the MWK Innovation Fund.
With the project WHO CARES?, PAN.OPTIKUM will be present in Freiburg’s Güterbahnhof/Brühl district from mid-May to early August
The project combines artistic interventions in public space with opportunities for participation for people from the neighborhood, followed by performances in the Lokhalle. At its core is the question of how care, attention, and shared responsibility can be experienced in a newly emerging urban district.
We are very pleased that WHO CARES? is funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg as part of its project funding program for professional private theaters. Further information about the project will soon be available on a dedicated project page here on our website. Information about the funding can also be found in the Ministry’s press release.

Our cooperation project “Subtera” is being funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts Baden-Württemberg through its Innovation Fund.
Our new cooperation project Subtera is one of 28 projects selected for funding by the Baden-Württemberg Arts Innovation Fund in 2025. This year’s focus theme was “democracy.”
“The Arts Innovation Fund of the MWK Baden-Württemberg makes it possible to realize exceptional art and cultural projects that break new ground, for example with regard to target groups, venues, content, participation strategies, artistic forms of expression, or with cross-disciplinary approaches.”
With Subtera, an innovative concert format that connects music, game design, sensor technology, and ecological research, we are joining forces with our cooperation partners Holistic Compost Lab (St. Peter) and Sensopart (Gottenheim) to explore new territory. In doing so, Lena Frei (Game Design & Visual Communication), Ralf Schmid (Piano, Electronics & Composition), and Leonie Fritsch (Curation & Dramaturgy) are creating a format that involves people in the audience as co-creators and dissolves boundaries between different disciplines.
At the center, and as a source of inspiration, is compost (!) as a metaphor for transformation, diversity, and co-creation. Just as in living soil with microorganisms, soil fauna, root networks, and humus, Subtera transfers this principle to the stage: audience, musicians, and technology jointly shape a space of sound and image that is in constant flux. With the help of sensors and movement, audience members can actively influence sound and dramaturgy and thus create a shared experience that brings together art and technology.
Another special feature of the project: very different partners from the Freiburg–Southern Black Forest–Kaiserstuhl region pool their know-how. The Holistic Compost Lab (St. Peter) and Sensopart (Gottenheim) contribute their expertise in ecology and sensor technology.
