New community arts project WHO CARES? received special funding from the State of Baden-Württemberg
From mid-May to early August, we were out and about with WHO CARES? in Freiburg’s Güterbahnhof/Brühl neighbourhood. The project combined artistic interventions in public spaces with opportunities for local residents to get involved, followed by performances at the Lokhalle. At the heart of the project was the question of how care, attention and shared responsibility can be experienced in a neighbourhood that is still taking shape. We are very pleased that WHO CARES? received funding from the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts through its project funding programme for professional independent theatres. In July 2026, we invited visitors to the Lokhalle for a four-week WHO CARES? exhibition and a mini-festival featuring the following performances and events:

MISSING FACE, Choreographic Installation
PRACTICE BATTLE, Battle Workshop & Try-Out Battle
CARE, Community Dance Performance
SUBTERA, Immersive Game Concert
LOKAL VIBES, Battle and Workshop, Hip-Hop, Funk & House
Three interactive installations were placed around the neighbourhood: WORTRAUM, BALANCESPIEL and KLANGHEXAGON. They invited people to play, explore and take part.
They can now be found in our outdoor area at the Lokhalle, between Purino and the railway tracks

What do we understand by CARE?
Why did we choose this topic?
In a broad sense, CARE is everything we do to preserve our world. Everything we do to repair existing shortcomings and to ensure that we can continue living in our world in the future.
With our project WHO CARES?, we wanted to explore different perspectives on this topic.
What role can CARE play in a democratic society?
How do we define “responsibility of care” in the way we live together?
What role do art and culture play when we wish for care, responsibility, and cohesion?
How does our thinking change when we experience something together?
Throughout the project, BALANCESPIEL, WORTRAUM and KLANGHEXAGON offered different ways for people to get involved. Visitors could share their thoughts, experiences and opinions, and explore the questions and themes of WHO CARES?
The CARE dance project also encouraged active participation. Young people aged 14 and over were invited to join workshops with our choreographer Luka Putniņa, become part of the creative process and take part in a stage production.
