EMPREINTE – Imprints from One’s Own Biography
What remains when everything familiar suddenly disappears?
With EMPREINTE, Aktionstheater PAN.OPTIKUM has created a dance theatre project that explores biographical imprints shaped by historical upheaval, migration, and personal experiences. In the German-French border region between Freiburg and Alsace, these traces remain visible in everyday life—be it through language, cultural peculiarities, or family histories.
A Cross-Border Collaborative Work
EMPREINTE was developed in close collaboration with the cultural center Art’Rhena and young people from the Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald district and the Alsace region. Professional dancers from Kaunas (LT), Riga (LV), Lisbon (PT), and Freiburg met with local youth during an extended series of workshops. Together, they created a performance that premiered at the Lokhalle in Freiburg and at Art’Rhena in Neuf-Brisach.

What Remains – And What Do We Pass On?
At the heart of the piece are the empreintes—those indelible imprints etched into our bodies and memories. EMPREINTE poses a fundamental question: How free are we in how we carry these traces? Can we choose what we preserve and what we pass on?
Les danseur·euse·s et l’équipe créative de PAN.OPTIKUM ont élaboré avec les jeunes, en plusieurs phases d’atelier et sur une période de plusieurs mois, une performance qui sera présentée le 11 mai à la Lokhalle de Fribourg et les 7 et 8 juin à Art’Rhena.
Now Across Europe
Following its acclaimed premieres, EMPREINTE is now going on tour. In June 2025, the piece will be presented to an international audience at the prestigious FITS Festival in Sibiu, Romania.

EMPREINTE is an ideal choice for venues seeking internationally oriented, participatory, and innovative dance theatre. The production is technically adaptable, fully tourable, and has already proven successful in both urban and rural settings.
The project was supported by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg, the Franco-German Youth Office, and the Collectivité Européenne d’Alsace.
